Diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer

Diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer

Such a scary time… two weeks ago you were on top of the world, but after a visit to your doctor because of persistent abdominal pain and bloating, you were given a diagnosis of ovarian cancer.

Now what?

Your physician will probably order more tests and if a tumor is discovered, you will be sent to an oncologist who will likely schedule surgery. From there, chemotherapy of some type is normally prescribed.

At this point, you may decide to change your diet. There is much evidence that a low-fat, plant-based diet can improve your condition.

In an abstract written by D. Ganmaa and A. Sato for the Med Hypotheses, concern was raised about cows’ milk because it contains considerable estrogen. Milk we are now drinking is usually from pregnant cows, therefore, estrogen levels in women who drink milk are much more concentrated than they were a number of years ago.

Studies of the data from 40 countries identified meat as a factor most closely correlated with breast cancer incidence, followed by milk and cheese.

Milk was most closely correlated with the incidence of ovarian cancer, followed by animal fats and cheese.

The conclusions reached were that increased consumption of animal-derived food can have adverse effects on the development of hormone-dependent cancers.

Ovarian cancer may cause several signs and symptoms, but those same symptoms may be caused by other benign conditions. That makes it hard to detect ovarian cancer at an early stage. If you have bloating, abdominal pain, frequency of urination, fatigue, weight loss or constipation more that 12 times a month, see your doctor.

In the meantime, change your diet to help prevent hormone dependent cancers or to improve your quality of life if you have already been diagnosed.
